Random Acts of Kindness

One of the most popular website groups, back in the day, was RAOK, of Random Acts Of Kindness. It was founded in 1999, by Jean Gosling, aka Lady Lacey, and her daughter Candi, from Canada. They thought that just a few people would join, but in the end, thousands of people from all over the world, joined together to make online little acts of kindness. There were committees and special projects, and a lot of friendship.

What were those little RAOK? Signing other people's guestbooks and leaving them a kind and encouraging message, leaving little graphic "gifts", or sending e-cards. NOthing expensive of ostentatious, just little notes of "hello, I'm here, I see you". There was a special group, called the Pink Ladies, for women who had or had survived breast cancer, or who joined just to help spread awareness. There was a "quilt for the cause" group, where members made graphics to be put together, to make a digital quilt. It was a very enjoyable group, but as social media took over and people's websites disappeared, ROAK also vanished. I think we need it more than ever today. There are not many personal websites still around today, but there is a growing movement of Web 1 websites being created. There is still room for the online ROAK, I am sure!
